From a tribute to 50 years of Hip Hop to Shakira’s medley and Diddy’s performance: here are the most exciting moments of the 40th MTV Awards.
It is now 40 years since the first MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Sept. 14, 1984, hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd.
Taking the stage that night were Madonna in the iconic wedding dress worn for the performance of ‘Like a Virgin‘; Cyndi Lauper, the most awarded female artist for the video for ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun‘ and ‘Time After Time‘; while the best video of the year went to The Cars with ‘You Might Think‘.
It did cause talk, however, about the glaring absence of Michael Jackson, who won three awards for the video clip of ‘Thriller‘ but did not show up at the awards ceremony, having his friend Diana Ross take the stage instead.
The 40th Edition held on September 13, 2023 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, we will remember some truly moving performances, speeches and medleys.
