The Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens for three days was transformed into a mega gathering of more than 50 thousand people a day, all in eager anticipation - given the rich line up that included Kendrik Lamar, Future, Kid Cudi, among others.

The three-day Hip Hop Mega Festival held quite a few surprises.

Since 2015, the Rolling Loud has been considered the biggest Hip Hop festival in the world, bringing together the genre’s biggest artists each year. This year, the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens for three days was transformed into a mega gathering of more than 50 thousand people a day, all in eager anticipation – given the rich line up that included Kendrik Lamar, Future, Kid Cudi, among others.

Beyond the great show, there was certainly no shortage of surprises: here are Highlights of how the festival went.

Along with Kendric Lamar and Future, the third headliner was supposed to be Kanye West, but on July 17 – just four days before the performance, the Rolling Loud Miami’s Instagram page let it be known that the Chicago rapper will not be the main guest and that Kid Cudi will perform instead.

Already a few months ago, Ye had backed out of performing at Coachella, blowing it off just days before the event was scheduled to begin; Rolling Loud‘s would be yet another two-fer served unceremoniously to the two founders Tariq Cherif and Matt Zingle; who in an earlier interview had stated:

“We were looking forward to hosting Ye at Rolling Loud Miami. We spent months working together with him and his team to ensure the best possible performance for the audience.”

Despite the dire premises, Ye amazed everyone by showing up on stage on the day set for his performance, Friday, July 22, while Lil Durk was performing.

The two recently collaborated on Cardi B’s track “Hot S—.”

Dressed in a black hoodie, ski goggles and face painted black, Ye performed “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” with Cudi, from his 2016 album “The Life of Pablo.”

“Just 2 Chicagoats,” Lil Durk wrote in an Instagram post after their performance, referring to their shared hometown of Chicago.

Kid Cudi – as we mentioned – replaced Kanye West as the Festival’s headliner for the day Friday, July 22. Perhaps the audience did not like the choice and to express their dissent, unfairly targeted the Grammy-winning rapper as soon as he came on stage by hitting him with from water bottles and other objects.

In videos posted on social media, Cudi can be seen performing on stage as he is hit in the face by one of the objects thrown by the audience, and after yet another warning, the “Do What I Want” emcee exited the stage, abruptly ending his performance.

Rolling Loud addressed the incident in a statement posted on Twitter Saturday:

“Rolling Loud is a family. Our fans, artists and everyone involved need to look out for each other,” the tweet read. “Share the love and be respectful to everyone. We love you, Cudi.”

The latest surprise comes on Saturday, July 23, when during Future’s performance, Travis Scott unexpectedly takes the stage to duet their trap single “Hold That Heat,” marking his first appearance at a major festival since the Astroworld tragedy in 2021.

In November 2021, Scott’s Astroworld festival in Houston turned into a carnage, killing 10 people and injuring hundreds: an unprecedented incident.

Despite ongoing lawsuits and ongoing controversy, Scott has continued to return to the stage, performing at the Billboard Music Awards in May and booking a spot at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound music festival for November.

There were many surprises at Rolling Loud Festival 22, and several unreleased pieces were brought to the stage in addition to great performances.
