Once at the backstage of a Teriyaki Boyz concert, Kanye West, Virgil Abloh and Verbal met by chance. Verbal was wearing some rings designed by Yoon Ahn that caught the attention of the designer and the rapper, and from that moment, her commitment and word-of-mouth did the rest.

The famous designer Yoon Ahn, known as Yoon Ambush, is the fashion crush of the moment.

Probably she is not as popular as her brand AMBUSH, but there is so much more from Yoon Ahn than just her brand. This Korean-American graphic designer is also the jewellery design director of Dior Homme (where she was chosen by the one and only, Kim Jones) and has so many celebrities that follow her and admire her work.

She has proclaimed to have come out of nowhere. It all began when Yoon Ahn started designing jewellery with her husband, the Japanese hip hop artist Verbal, who is also part of the Teriyaki Boyz. Soon after that, they became famous, but not before putting all their hearts and effort into it. Once at the backstage of a Teriyaki Boyz concert, Kanye West, Virgil Abloh and Verbal met by chance. Verbal was wearing some rings designed by Yoon Ahn that caught the attention of the designer and the rapper, that now calls himself Ye, and from that moment, her commitment and word-of-mouth did the rest.

Maybe the complete artistic freedom that resulted from starting from the bottom, is what let her find a unique street style. Her rebellious jewels are inspired in life itself and are permeated with fun and a pinch of high-end glamour. Mixing Californian grunge, hip hop and Tokyo’s underground subcultures, she achieved the highest place in the streetwear rankings, even though she doesn’t like that word. She believes that the clothes she creates are comfortable apparel that help you adjust to the brisk speed at which we live today, without fitting in the category of streetwear.

Celebrities like Rihanna have worn Yoon’s designs, positioning Ambush on the top of fashion. She has participated in collaborations with brands such as Sacai, Undercover, Louis Vuitton, Beats, and many more. But her collection with Nike is undoubtedly what dramatically changed the course of things for her brand. It has been one of the most praised and popular collections from last year, with clothes being resold for incredibly high prices.

Recently, Yoon Ahn has launched her new collection for Dior Homme and her new project for the Ambush SS19 collection (having celebrities in the showroom like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, among others). Her brand started eleven years ago, but she only introduced clothes to Ambush in 2015, as she wanted to create the perfect background for her jewellery.

 

Yoon is completely redefining the boundaries of the role of designers in today’s culture. Her revolution in the world of fashion is unstoppable. Having been part of a generation of artists that grew up under the skateboarding lifestyle and that takes most of its inspiration from the 90s and early 2000’s street aesthetics, she is now submerged in today’s reality and presenting unconventional and functional clothes that bring comfort to daily life with enchanting urban and modern codes. We can’t really ask for more.
