The tumblelog can also include all the processes and the long way between an idea and the concluding post, exactly like we would do with a notepad, where we take notes that will lead us to the creative content.

Amazing talents without creativity, from Tumblr to TikTok

I was chatting with a stylist recently and she talked about “tumblrers”. It was a term that I had never heard before, but it would become the concept that captured the essence of a generation of youngsters that seem to have forgotten what creativity is all about. However, this scheme suggests a new technique based on references. Let’s now dig deeper into this matter.

Most of you must already know Tumblr, a platform where its users can post their writings, audios, videos and images in something called a tumblelog, sometimes also called tlog. Most of the time all of these posts are random and have no clear order or anything in common besides being made by the same person.

The tumblelog can also include all the processes and the long way between an idea and the concluding post, exactly like we would do with a notepad, where we take notes that will lead us to the creative content.

Tumblr has adapted its organization in the digital world since it was founded in 2007, making it one of the most important social networking sites of the early 2000s, but its influence was so ‘important’ that it lasted for at least two generations, until the latest advent of TikTok.

I will now share some thoughts about the developing lack of creativity as a consequence of these references.

The Tumblr Generation

In 2012, Tumblr was everywhere. It filled up the web with an incredible amount of captivating creative content. It had profiles full of scary images, an excessive amount of senseless opinions, outfits, delicate poetry, provocative videos, creative writing, memes, travelling journals, porn and many other things. This seeming inconsequentiality would eventually result in what we call today aesthetic.

Then it seemed like everything that made no sense was actually related, and this is how the real reference sites were born with content that is also relevant today.

Some accounts that are great example of this, are: Dads are the original hipsters, Nes title screens, Old love and Eye on Springfield.

Nowadays, all the artistic creations seem to have originated from Tumblr references, which is not exactly a bad thing, as this has always existed and is called creative heritage. Therefore, we would like to motivate you to detect the difference between the constant element like references and the circumstantial element that represents all the new contributions.

Discerning these two factors will promote the creation of limitless innovative ideas. So dear Tumblrers, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get down to work!
