The future is already here, swear technology experts.
Who has never seen a sci-fi film where the protagonists have a visor in front of their eyes with which they interact with the world around them, without even leaving the house?
The future conjured up in the movies has become a tangible reality as of yesterday, 6 June 2023, at the exact moment that Apple launched the long-awaited Vision Pro.
What is the Vision Pro?
It is a smart glasses that seems to herald a post I-Phone, but also a post Mac and Tablet, if you will. Apple’s Vision Pro is an ocular visor capable, in a nutshell, of generating virtual reality environments and proposing, using multiple cameras, sensors and a display, to create an experience capable of replicating augmented reality.
Let’s start with the basics: Vision Pro is a so-called mixed reality (MR) visor, capable, in a nutshell, of generating virtual reality (VR) environments and proposing, by exploiting its multiple cameras, sensors and display, an experience capable of replicating that of augmented reality (AR), but which in fact is not augmented.
What can one do with the Apple Vison Pro?
You can surf Safari in an immersive way, watch a movie in Virtual Reality, play games or make FaceTime video calls, do fitness exercises as if you were in the gym among people, take photos and work, view Apple maps as if you were walking down those streets. All thanks to VisionOS technology, which is a highly innovative operating system made specifically by Apple for the Vision Pro.
Brand new is the fact that the Vision Pro can be controlled with the movement of your eyes, your voice and your fingers. No mouse, no wands and no controller. Everything is in the user’s ”hand” with just a glance; one only has to look at an icon to open it.
What will change with the arrival of Vision Pro?
With Vision Pro, the perception and enjoyment of the technological object changes: from passive to active. Vision Pro‘s interface is intuitive, it has a sophisticated Apple-style design and, above all, it has technical specifications never before seen on this type of product. A revolution that the brand announced some time ago and that has raised the hype to the stars among hi-tech enthusiasts.
Apple’s history, from Steve Jobs to Tim Cook, has always taught us that each of the brand’s products has forever changed the rules of the game: with the era of the I-Phone that introduced the full-screen smartphone, with the I-Pad the era of the tablet began, which forever changed the way we navigate, with the Apple Watch the era of smart watches began, and now, with Vision Pro, the era of augmented reality that becomes part of our everyday life begins.
For now, the launch price, around $3500, still places it in the luxury item, destined for a few enthusiasts or development companies, but when it becomes mainstream, will it change our perception of what is real and what is not?
