“Virgil Abloh: The Codes c/o Architecture” showcases all his Sneakers in collaboration with Nike.

One year after his untimely death, the eclectic vision of the designer of Off-White, LV and Nike continues to influence the latest generations of creatives around the world.

Virgil Abloh’s vast universe contains many ramifications in the field of art: from the design of clothes and accessories for Luis Vuitton, to trainers for Nike and even iterior design, just think of his designs produced for Ikea x Off-White. Part of his most significant production has found an honourable place at Miami Art Week – from 29 November to 4 December – with the exhibition “Virgil Abloh: The Codes c/o Architecture”, curated by Nike and showcasing all the collaborations between the designer and the brand.

A large lithgbox in the centre of the Rubell Museum in Miami displays rows of hundreds of Sneakers with Abloh‘s unmistakable touch, together with his other interior design projects, such as the stereo system and record players.

Co-curated by Alessio Ascari of “Architecture”, a division of Nike created by Abloh himself – The Codes c/o Architecture presents works organized in six different sections of projects that Abloh has created with Nike over the course of his four-year collaboration with the brand.

The exhibition explores – and demonstrates – how designing Sneakers was the starting point for Virgil‘s formal studies in architecture and design, as well as his obsessive involvement with subcultural forms such as Hip Hop, graffiti, and Skateboarding.

The exhibition included Abloh’s first collaboration with Nikecalled Ten – which included a collection of 10 classic Nike shoes reimagined by the designer, broken down and put back together by reversing the classic order, according to his creative vision.

The exhibition also showed how his design became more complex as his collaboration with Nike continued, concluding the excursus with the latest cracks of Basketball shoes combined with hiking shoes.

According to Nike, the aim of the exhibition is to continue Virgil Abloh‘s legacy beyond a one-man practice and to establish a long-term open-source education programme on his design.

On 2 December 2022, the Beaverton-based brand released a new trainer in collaboration with Off-White, which has been art directed by Ibrahim Kamara for several months.

The legacy of the visionary designer from Illinois is destined to last; his language will continue to survive. Fortunately.
